US ITER Project Office Will Be Located At Princeton Plasma Physics Lab

The US Department of Energy announced today that the US project office for ITER, a major international fusion experiment, will be located at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL). PPPL is located on Princeton University’s James Forrestal Campus in Plainsboro, NJ, and is charged with developing the scientific understanding and key innovations that will lead to an attractive fusion energy source.

Chicago To Adopt Ordinances Requiring Energy Efficient Homes, Buildings

Under an initiative developed by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus (MMC), more than 1.7 million northern Illinois residents live in communities requiring all new construction and rehabbed buildings to meet a minimum level of energy efficiency. As concerns about fuel and energy cost grows, more than 5.4 million others live in communities across Illinois that are considering adoption of similar local ordinances.

New CoolSentry Summer Energy Program To Forestall Local Power Emergencies

Comverge announced Tuesday the roll out of CoolSentry, its free service offered to businesses and residents in Connecticut's Fairfield and New Haven counties. Participation reduces electricity consumption during peak demand periods through remote conservation cycling of central air conditioning units. CoolSentry is a locally deployed program to help forestall summer power emergencies, while offering the positive environmental benefit of reducing greenhouse gases.

End Not In Sight For Solar Powered Mars Rovers

At a NASA-sponsored briefing for journalists last December, scientists with the Mars Exploration Rover missions described the various hazards that could cut short the planned, twin 90 (Earth) day operations on the red planet and limit the amount of data shipped home by the robotic vehicles from their respective landing sites.

Aurora Photovoltaic Inverter Maximizes Solar Energy Harvesting

Magnetek Monday formally unveiled its Aurora 3.0 kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) inverter for the North American market at the Solar 2004 trade show in Portland, Oregon. The Aurora PV inverter changes direct current (DC) produced by solar panels into utility-grade alternating current (AC). Connectivity to the utility grid enables the new Aurora PV inverter to feed power into the grid as well as to power local loads independent of the grid.

State-owned Saudi Aramco will buy 15 percent of Shell's Japanese oil refiner Showa Shell Sekiyu KK. The move comes as Saudi Aramco attempts to secure long-term crude exports to Japan. Showa Shell, which now buys its crude from Shell and via oil traders, will start buying Aramco crude beginning in spring 2005.
