GoSolarMarin Credited With Driving Down Costs Of Solar Installations
San Rafael CA (SPX) Feb 20, 2008 GoSolarMarin, a coalition created to lower the price and to increase the availability of solar power, has been cited in an international solar industry magazine as having started a movement that "...spells a great deal for California consumers." In an article entitled "DRIVING DOWN COSTS," PHOTON International magazine published in Germany, interviewed GoSolarMarin's founder and creator, Lisa Max, as well as several major solar providers. In talking to the PHOTON International reporter "and from my conversations with industry experts in other parts of the country, it seems that we may be the first group to get pricing below $8 per watt," Max said. "That seems to have been the 'magic number.' "When I was interviewed late last year," Max said, "GoSolarMarin had just held its first public meeting. We had about 65 'interested' people. Now, we're moving steadily towards 1000. We have had inquiries from all over Northern California about how we conducted the process and I've spoken with media all over the country." GoSolarMarin, created in September 2007, conducted a rigorous RFP process involving 15 solar power companies, before finally selecting SPG Solar of Novato as its initial preferred vendor. SPG offered pricing of $7.94 per installed watt, before rebates, to all residents and businesses in Marin County. The prevailing rate in the County had been $9.32 per watt. After California rebates, this lowers the current net price to $5.74 per watt. The SPG offer ends February 29. Max said she continues to have conversations about extending the offer or re-issuing the RFP. "With several months of experience," she said, "we are getting a sense of the numbers and what we might negotiate next. At the same time, consumers should be aware that some rebates have expired or are about to expire, so waiting for the 'next deal' is not a guarantee of lower prices."
