Toronto (UPI) Dec 16, 2009 Some 700 people in the Canadian province of Ontario have been approved to install rooftop solar panels to feed electricity back into the power grid. The feed-in tariff program overseen by the Ontario Power Authority began accepting applications Oct. 1 for homeowners to participate and has since received 1,200 applications, an authority release from Toronto said Wednesday. The approved sites have a combined capacity of generating about 8.6 megawatts, which is enough electricity to power about 1,000 average homes. Additionally, some 1,100 applications from larger sites capable of generating more than 10 kilowatts have been received and are still being assessed, the authority said. "The Ontario Power Authority estimates that the first ... projects will generate in excess of $5 billion in investments in manufacturing, design, construction and engineering and lead to the creation of thousands of new jobs," the release said.
