Storing Green Electricity As Natural Gas
Bonn, Germany (SPX) May 06, 2010
Renewable electricity can be transformed into a substitute for natural gas. Until now, electricity was generated from gas. Now, a German-Austrian cooperation wants to go in the opposite direction. In the future, these researchers and entrepreneurs would like to store surplus electricity - such as from wind power or solar energy - as climate-neutral methane, and store it in existing gas storage facilities and the natural gas network. Throughout the world, electricity generation is based more and mo ... read more

Did a global ocean save Earth from the cold
Stanford CA (SPX) Apr 13, 2010
Four billion years ago, our then stripling Sun radiated only 70 to 75 percent as much energy as it does today. Other things on Earth being equal, with so little energy reaching the planet's surface, all water on the planet should been have frozen. But ancient rocks hold ample evidence that the early Earth was awash in liquid water - a planetary ocean of it. So something must have compensated for ... more

How Is Electrical Power Carried Across The Sea
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Apr 13, 2010
Two trends are emerging for future renewable electricity. In the first, local solar, wind or biomass plants will produce more energy for small communities or single homes. In the second, large amounts of electricity will be generated by solar power stations in desert areas or extensive offshore wind farms, and delivered over long distances to densely populated areas. But how can electrical power be delivered over long distances without large losses? The solution to this problem is direct cur ... read more
