A 6-year-old girl in East Jakarta, Indonesia, died from a suspected case of bird flu after being diagnosed with typhoid fever, her mother said.

The girl died Saturday at Persahabatan Hospital four days after she reported feeling dizzy, said her mother, identified only by her initials MS, The Jakarta Post reported Tuesday.

The doctor who diagnosed the child as having typhoid fever told the mother to take her to the hospital, where doctors then said they suspected the girl had bird flu, her mother said.

"The doctor at Persahabatan hospital said my daughter had only a slim chance of surviving because the virus had already spread through her body," she said.

No details were given as to how the girl might have contracted the virus.
