A Michigan company is recalling more than 1,000 cans of green beans that may be contaminated with bacterium that causes botulism.

The canned cut green beans were manufactured by New Era Canning Company, New Era, Mich., and distributed by Gordon Food Service as "GFS Fancy Blue Lake Cut Green Beans." New Era is voluntarily recalling 171 cases each containing six cans of the green beans, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Friday in a release.

Botulism can result in a life-threatening illness or death. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this incident, the FDA said.

The green beans were distributed to retailers, restaurants and food service in large institutional-sized, 6 pound 5 ounce cans. The lot code is 9H7FL and the UPC code is 93901 11873,

The green beans were distributed to food service customers in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia and sold through GFS Marketplace stores in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Even tiny amounts of the C. botulinum toxin ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the eye or a break in the skin can cause serious illness, the FDA said.
