Kazakhstan's first special forces ship enters service
Astana, Kazakhstan (UPI) Jul 22, 2016 - Kazakhstan has launched its first modernized special forces ship for the country's naval forces, the ministry of defense announced.

Built domestically, the ship will guard against underwater sabotage in port security operations, the ministry said.

The vessel is also equipped for detecting, classifying and determining the movements of combat swimmers while also offering modern communication and navigation capabilities.

The 42-foot-long ship launched in Urlask and will make its way to the Caspian Sea to go through factory mooring, driving and acceptance tests before it takes on missions.

Commissioning of a combat unit is an important step for the Kazakh navy due to the increased geopolitical and economic importance of the region, the MOD said.

The ship joins a fleet that already includes modern missile and artillery ships, small boats and patrol boats, the ministry said.

BAE's first new rigid inflatable boat for Royal Navy compete
Portsmouth, England (UPI) Jul 22, 2016 - BAE Systems has completed the first of 60 next-generation rigid inflatable boats, or RIBs, being built for the U.K. Royal Navy as part of a 13.5-million pound contract, worth about $20 million when it was signed in December.

The vanguard of the next-generation Pacific 24 Mark-4 craft was completed out of BAE's Portsmouth Naval Base location, the company said.

It will be deployed on Royal Navy ships like offshore patrol vessels and the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, the first of which will arrive in Portsmouth next spring, BAE said.

The RIBs deploy from ship or shore at speeds of up to 44 mph and can quickly respond to fast rescue, anti-piracy and counter-narcotics missions.

The Pacific 24 Mark-4 also features high-performance, shock-absorbing seats that will minimize crew fatigue, allowing for longer-range missions.

China delivered a third C28A-class corvette to the Algerian navy earlier this month, China Daily reported this week.

The stealth guided-missile ship was commissioned by the Algerian navy on July 12 at a Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group port in Shanghai, the report states.

Featuring a displacement of 3,000 metric tons, the 360-foot-long corvette can conduct offshore defense operations and long-distance combat missions.

It is larger than previous warships China has sold to foreign customers.

The ship also features new equipment, a stealth design and a higher level of automation.

The contract for the corvettes was signed in 2011.

The first ship in the class was delivered in September, with the second handed over in January.

Cotecmar delivers two ships to Colombia
Bogota (UPI) Jul 22, 2016 - The Colombian navy has taken delivery of two new amphibious landing ships, the Ministry of Defense announced Thursday.

The ships were built by the Colombian Corporation of Science and Technology for the Development of the Naval, Maritime and Fluvial, or Cotecmar, the ministry said in a statement.

The ARC Gulf of Morrosquillo and the ARC Malaga Bay will conduct humanitarian missions.

They also mark a milestone for Cotecmar as they are the first time two ships were built simultaneously, the ministry said.

The ships will allow the sea service to access remote sites only reachable by water.

They will be able to conduct operations in riverine and coastal areas while providing support to disaster relief missions and offering logistical support to diverse, remote populations.

The ships will also be used to transport troops and cargo.
