China gives DRCongo 52-mln-dlr donation

Kinshasa (AFP) Jan 12, 2011
China has granted the Democratic Republic of Congo 52 million dollars in aid with "no strings attached" during a visit by Chinese vice premier Hui Liangyu, a diplomatic source said Wednesday.

The two countries signed "two draft agreements of which one is a donation worth 50 million yuan (52 million dollars, 40 million euros) with nothing in return," said a communique from the Congolese prime minister's office.

China will also provide medical equipment and material, it said.

"China is determined to deepen its friendship with the DR Congo," Hui was cited in the text as saying.

Kinshasa signed a controversial and later revised agreement with three Chinese companies in 2007 over a Chinese loan worth six billion dollars, partially refundable in mining claims.

The agreement included the construction or re-building of thousands of kilometres of roads and railways, two dams, several hospitals, as well as housing and schools across a country ravaged by years of war.

Following Mauritius, Zambia and the DR Congo, the Chinese vice premier will visit Cameroon and Senegal before wrapping up touron on January 19.
