China rejects US web hijack allegations

Beijing (AFP) Nov 19, 2010
China hit back Friday at a US report claiming a Chinese state-owned telecoms firm had hijacked sensitive Internet traffic on American government and military websites, calling it politically biased.

The report, presented to Congress Wednesday, said China Telecom rerouted email traffic to and from websites of the US Senate, the Department of Defense, and "many others" including national space agency NASA for 18 minutes on April 8.

"This report ignores the facts and is full of Cold War thinking and political bias," foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement.

The report, compiled by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, said the rerouting began at a smaller Chinese Internet service provider before being propagated by China Telecom.

The company, one of China's major telecommunications operators, has denied the claims.

"We advise this so-called commission to stop interfering in China's internal affairs and do more for mutual trust and cooperation between China and the United States," Hong said.

Leading web security firm McAfee has warned of a rise in cyberattacks with political objectives, pointing to China as one of the leading players in assaults on foreign networks.

But Beijing has always dismissed allegations of Chinese involvement in such attacks.
