Baltimore MD (SPX) Oct 13, 2009 Constellation Energy has announced that its subsidiary, Constellation Energy's Projects and Services Group, will construct a photovoltaic power system that will generate approximately 525 kilowatts of clean, renewable solar power at Patriot Place, the 1.3-million-square-foot entertainment, retail and dining destination adjacent to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The system will supply approximately 30 percent of Patriot Place's power and span seven building rooftops at the complex. Construction, expected to begin in late October, will include the installation of approximately 2,800 crystalline photovoltaic panels. Among the buildings hosting the solar power system is The Hall at Patriot Place Presented by Raytheon, an award-winning sports and education experience that is one of Patriot Place's highlights. Photovoltaic panels on the roof of The Hall will be visible to visitors from inside Gillette Stadium and from Patriot Place's upper retail plaza. "In addition to this project being an important contribution to Patriot Place's overall sustainability initiatives, we are proud that its visibility will help promote practical and cost-effective commercial applications of solar power," said Brian Earley, Patriot Place General Manager. Constellation Energy's Projects and Services Group estimates that the system will generate more than 12 million kilowatt hours of electricity over 20 years, and will prevent the release of more than 8,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That is the equivalent of removing more than 1,600 passenger vehicles from the road for a year. The system's real time power output and performance can be monitored through a Web-based data acquisition system. "We are pleased that Patriot Place recognized the expertise of Constellation Energy's Projects and Services Group in designing, constructing and maintaining large scale renewable power systems that deliver sustainable energy in an affordable manner," said Greg Jarosinski, president and CEO of Constellation Energy's Projects and Services Group. "Developing a solar power system at the highly visible, highly trafficked Patriot Place gives us an opportunity to demonstrate to the general public that distributed renewable power systems are a viable and practical component of our energy future." Under a 20-year power purchase agreement, Constellation Energy's Projects and Services Group will own the energy assets and sell the electricity it generates on site to Patriot Place. Patriot Place, which began opening in phases in 2008, was constructed utilizing sustainable design practices, including low-emitting construction materials and white roofs to facilitate heat island reduction. Patriot Place also employs an on-site wastewater re-use system that saves millions of gallons of water annually, and solar-powered trash receptacles throughout the complex reduce waste volume and energy consumption. Working with customers to make installations like this economical is one part of Constellation Energy's Projects and Services Group's turn-key, single-source approach to renewable energy projects that also includes project design, financing, construction, long-term power supply and system maintenance. Constellation Energy's Projects and Services Group has developed approximately 8 megawatts of on-site solar projects nationwide, part of a portfolio that also includes wind, biomass and geothermal systems and more than 4,000 energy efficiency and infrastructure projects throughout the U.S. Share This Article With Planet Earth
