Enhanced high-capacity data radios are being supplied to an unidentified member country of NATO by Exelis under a $12 million contract.

Exelis' high-capacity data radio, or HCDR, is a self-managing, ad hoc networking radio that provides a secure data link between mounted and dismounted troops. Its data rates are higher than eight megabits per second.

It also enables full network integration of data and voice capabilities through Internet Protocol for transmission of critical information, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance data.

"This award is a result of this country's armed forces commitment to the superior capabilities of products like our Enhanced HCDR, and our pledge to deliver cutting-edge, ready-now solutions," said Chris Reith, the managing director of Exelis Defense Limited.

The units will be produced at the company's Basingstoke facility through 2016, the company said, but no information was given as to the number of units to be produced.
