First Solar Farms Under Construction In Denmark

Skytrap orients the solar modules towards the brightest and therefore most energy-rich point in the sky.

The solar system company mp-tec GmbH and Co. KG delivered its Skytrap tracking systems for one of the first Danish solar farms from its headquarters in Eberswalde near Berlin to Nordborg in Denmark.

The solar farm is currently under construction and due to open in early 2011. The single-axis trackers being installed there function with optoelectronic control and are an in-house development of the Brandenburg company. The control's highly sensitive sensor cells react even at low levels of global irradiation.

Skytrap orients the solar modules towards the brightest and therefore most energy-rich point in the sky.

"Thanks to this technology, even when the sun is hidden by clouds, the tracking system increases yields by up to 30 percent in comparison with a static system, as Skytrap has been optimised for use in this climate," says Roland Wenzel, CTO of mp-tec.

The client is Linak GmbH, a leading supplier of linear drive technology, which is also used in Skytrap.

Together with mp-tec, a development team worked on an efficient, long-life drive which was also to be maintenance-free to avoid any subsequent costs. Linak is so impressed with the result that the company is now using the system itself.

Linak's nearby production facility is due to be supplied with the electricity generated by the solar farm. Once the installation works are completed, some 500 square metres of solar modules are expected to generate 90,000 kilowatt hours of power annually.

By using renewable energies, the company plans to reduce its CO2 emissions by ten percent within one year. In addition to photovoltaic, Linak will in future also focus on wind energy, biogas, and the use of electric vehicles.
