NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter is preparing for its 49th flight on Mars, with a flight date scheduled for March 29th, 2023. The helicopter's goal for this flight is to reposition itself and conduct imaging science targets. During the flight, Ingenuity will travel a horizontal distance of 893.9 feet (272.5 meters) and reach a maximum altitude of 40 feet (12 meters), with a pop-up to 52.5 feet (16 meters) at the end. The flight is expected to last 135.47 seconds, with a top speed of 14.5 mph (6.5 meters per second) while heading northwest.

This flight is part of an aggressive driving campaign by the Perseverance rover up the river delta on Mars. Ingenuity's role in the mission is to provide the rover team with reconnaissance images of the unexplored area ahead of the rover, allowing for advanced notice of any unexpected terrain. However, the canyon-like river delta presents communication challenges between the rover and helicopter, limiting Ingenuity's ability to fly more than a few hundred meters ahead of the rover.

Despite these constraints, Ingenuity has completed multiple successful flights ahead of the rover, setting a new record for flight frequency and pushing the flight envelope of the rotorcraft. The helicopter team completed four flights in just nine days, with flight altitudes increasing from 10 meters to 12 meters and flight speeds reaching a record of 6 meters per second during Flight 45. These accomplishments are a testament to the dedication of the hard-working guidance, navigation, and control team.

While the team has faced some communication failures, anomalies with the rover, and a recurrence of a known camera issue, they are looking forward to scouting other nearby science targets while the rover is occupied over the next few sols. This flight is just the opening chapter of what has the potential to be an epic kilometers-long race on the red planet.

The race is on for Ingenuity and Perseverance to stay the distance
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 27, 2023
The Perseverance rover spent the first two Earth years of its mission on Mars driving and sampling within Jezero crater. As anticipated, Jezero was found to be rich with interesting geological features, and the rover used 21 of its precious 43 sample tubes in the region. The rover wrapped up this science campaign by dropping 10 of these samples in a backup depot area for retrieval by a future mission. With this important work out of the way, the rover's science team eagerly turned its attention to ... read more
