French, British, Spanish groups announce nuclear unit

by Staff Writers
Paris (AFP) Nov 29, 2010
Energy groups GDF Suez of France, SSE of Scotland and Iberdrola of Spain announced the formation Monday of a joint nuclear power unit, NuGeneration Limited, based in Britain.

They said the unit will develop a nuclear complex in Cumbria county, northwestern Britain, that will have the capacity to produce up to 3,600 megawatts of power.

The complex could enter service around 2023, after which NuGen could build other nuclear sites in Britain.

The company will be led by Olivier Carret, former head of operations and asset management at GDF Suez, and Alfio Vidal, a former security official with Iberdrola.

GDF Suez will control 37.5 percent of NuGen, Iberdrola 37.5 percent and SSE 25 percent.

The three groups last year forged an alliance to develop nuclear power stations in Britain.
