Havana (AFP) May 28, 2012

A French national has been killed attempting to cross a rain-swollen river in central Cuba, authorities said Monday.

The bodies of Alain Manaud, 66, and a Cuban Silvestre Fortun, 61, were found in a river in Santi Spiritus province, 350 kilometers (217 miles), east of Havana, officials said.

Heavy rains in the central provinces forced the evacuation of 8,000 people from flooded areas and damaged a thousand homes, according to official newspaper Juventud Rebelde.
