Israeli jets hit Islamic Jihad camps in Gaza

by Staff Writers
Gaza City (AFP) Feb 26, 2011
Israeli warplanes bombed two training camps of the hardline Islamic Jihad group in the Gaza Strip early on Saturday, Palestinian sources and the Israeli army said. No casualties were reported.

The jets hit two sites, one in the southern town of Khan Yunis and another near Nusseirat in the centre of the Hamas-ruled territory, security officials said.

The Israeli military said its aircraft "targeted a number of terror hubs... in response to recent rocket fire into Israel."

Islamic Jihad has always refused to observe a calm in attacks against Israel agreed by Gaza's Hamas rulers and other militant groups.

The air raids came after tensions rose along the Israel-Gaza border this week following clashes and a rocket attack on the Israeli city of Beersheba that hit a house but caused no casualties.

It was the first rocket to strike the city since the devastating offensive Israel waged against Gaza in December 2008-January 2009 and prompted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to warn the territory's militants not to "test" the Jewish state.
