Leonardo leads team for U.K. vehicle protection systems

Leonardo, Thales integrating missile-protection systems in Britain
Washington (UPI) Sep 13, 2017 - Leonardo and Thales will continue efforts to integrate and demonstrate their respective threat-warning and missile infrared counter-measure systems.

The continued work is being commissioned by Britain's Defense Science and Technology Laboratory and will lead to evaluation of the resultant system during trials next year, Leonardo said in a news release Wednesday.

The companies are currently working to marry Thales's 'Elix-IR' threat-warning system with Leonardo's 'Miysis' directed infrared counter-measure system.

The end-to-end protection system would be deployed to protect military and civil platforms, from small helicopters to large troop transports, against missiles, including shoulder-fired ones.

Under the contracts being issued, funding from the U.K. Ministry of Defense's laboratory will support lab-based and field trials of the integrated system in early 2018 and help evaluate its use for current and future U.K. air platform protection.

The result will be a highly capable, cost-effective and proven U.K. system that can automatically detect and defeat incoming missile threats to aircraft.

Elix-IR and Miysis are designed and manufactured in Britain. Thales and Leonardo will continue to market their systems individually but will also market the integrated protection capability.

Leonardo will lead a British team in the development and integration of active protection systems for army vehicles.

The U.K. government's Defense Science and Technology Laboratory selected the Italy-based company to lead the team, known as the Technology Demonstrator Program, Leonardo announced in a news release Wednesday.

As part of the program, the Leonardo team will demonstrate an operational prototype against "live fire" weapon engagements.

Members of the team, called the Incarus project, include BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin U.K., Ultra Electronics, Frazer-Nash, Brighton University, Abstract Solutions, Roke Manor Research and SCISYS.

Leonardo said armor by itself will not be sufficient to defend against the capabilities of future weapon systems, especially rocket propelled grenades and anti-tank guided weapons. A number of active protection system technologies have been developed and are available as off-the-shelf solutions but no single solution provides protection against all weapons in all environments.

The objective of the Icarus project is to develop modular protection systems that can be quickly tailored to function against specific threats or all threats during vehicle deployment.

The modular integrated protection system will integrate the best active protection systems sensors and counter-measures.
