Lonestar Data Holdings has reached a critical milestone with the successful testing and operation of its commercial data center payload while traveling through space en route to the Moon. This achievement marks a major step toward establishing the first-ever commercial lunar data center, reinforcing the vision of a robust and resilient space-based data infrastructure.

Since its launch on February 26, Lonestar's Freedom data center payload has journeyed over 300,000 kilometers aboard Intuitive Machines' Athena Lunar Lander, entering lunar orbit. During its transit through CisLunar space, the payload successfully completed vital operational tests, validating its technology's capability to function in the harsh conditions of space. Key accomplishments include:

- Successful execution of data storage and disaster recovery operations for government and enterprise clients, encompassing file uploads and downloads, data encryption and decryption, authentication, and in-space data processing.

- Demonstrated edge processing capabilities in space, supporting Valkyrie AI, the Exploration Institute, and other partners with efficient data handling.

- Proven endurance of its systems, with stable power, temperature, CPU memory, and telemetry readings, confirming the resilience of Lonestar's technology under extreme space conditions.

This commercial lunar data center is designed to provide a secure, independent, and robust storage solution for mission-critical data beyond Earth's confines. The recent in-space validation of its technology underscores its reliability and potential for future applications.

Next Steps: Lunar Surface Deployment

Having successfully tested its operations in space, Lonestar is now preparing for the next mission phase-operations on the lunar surface. When Athena lands as planned, no earlier than March 6, Lonestar's technology will undergo further testing on the Moon's surface, assessing its ability to function under one of the most extreme environments known to humanity.

A Pioneering Moment for Space-Based Data Storage

"Harnessing space as a resource for business, innovation, and long-term sustainability is key to driving the growth of the new space economy. At Space Florida, we are committed to advancing infrastructure and fostering partnerships that ensure Florida remains the premier hub for interplanetary commerce," said Rob Long, president and CEO of Space Florida. "Congratulations to our partners at Lonestar on another successful test mission to the Moon."

"This is our Kitty Hawk moment. This is where the future begins for this new resilient layer of critical global infrastructure serving us all down here on Earth. This is an extraordinary moment for Lonestar and for the future of secure global data storage," said Chris Stott, CEO of Lonestar Data Holdings. "By proving that our technology can operate in space, we are one step closer to establishing the Lunar L1 Lagrange Point and the Moon as the ultimate off-Earth storage and data resiliency solutions. We are thrilled with the results so far and eagerly anticipate the next phase of this groundbreaking mission."

As the need for secure, sovereign, and redundant data storage grows, leveraging the Moon and the surrounding space for digital asset preservation is becoming increasingly essential. Lonestar is committed to advancing lunar-based edge computing and storage solutions, ensuring vital data remains accessible and protected beyond Earth's infrastructure.

With its recent milestones successfully completed, Lonestar is poised to make history as the first company to operate a commercial data center on the lunar surface.

NASA Continuing Efforts to Restore Contact with Lunar Trailblazer
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Mar 05, 2025
NASA's mission operations team at Caltech's IPAC remains committed to restoring communication with the Lunar Trailblazer satellite, which recently lost signal. Preliminary telemetry data prior to the loss of contact, combined with ground-based radar observations from March 2, suggest that Lunar Trailblazer is in a low-power state and spinning slowly. Mission controllers are actively monitoring for any signals, hoping that a shift in the spacecraft's orientation will allow its solar panels to recei ... read more
