MBDA's Brimstone missile completes RAF trials

Raytheon contracted for work on AMRAAM guidance section
Washington (UPI) May 10, 2016 - The Air Force announced Monday a $104.5 million contract to Raytheon Missile Systems for work on the Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile, or AMRAAM, program.

The cost-plus-incentive-fee contract will provide form, function, fit and refresh of the missile's guidance section.

This contract involves foreign military sales to Saudi Arabia, Austraila, Romania and Australia. The work is expected to be completed by February 2017 and will be performed in Tucson, Ariz.

MBDA's enhanced Brimstone air-to-surface missile successfully completed U.K. Royal Air Force trials in February.

The trials, undertaken at China Lake in California, comprised 11 missile firings, including at the edge of the system's performance envelope, according to a company release.

Trials involved a variety of scenarios and resulted in precise hits on everything from very small, fast-moving vehicles to static targets.

Single and salvo firings, as well as laser, millimetric radar and dual-mode guided modes were utilized.

The firings also showcased the new Insensitive Munition warhead against armored and non-armored targets.

The RAF's Eurofighter Typhoon will be the first jet to receive the new Brimstone in 2018. Separate tests are being conducted to gauge Brimstone's use on the U.K.'s Future Attack Helicopter and Protector remote-piloted aircraft systems.

Jordan to receive Raytheon's TOW missiles
Amman, Jordan (UPI) May 10, 2016 - Jordan is acquiring Raytheon's tube-launched, optically tracked, wireless-guided missiles through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales Program.

Raytheon says its deliveries of the TOW system start this year following the signing of the FMS deal by the Jordanian Ministry of Defense and the U.S. Defense Department.

"Our international partners rely on the kind of extended-range precision TOW provides," said Scott Speet, Raytheon TOW program director. "We're looking forward to providing them this capability for many years to come."

TOW is a precision, anti-armor and anti-fortification weapon system with a range of about 2.6 miles. It was first produced in 1970 and comes in several variants. The system is integrated on more than 15,000 ground, vehicle and helicopter platforms worldwide.

Additional details of the FMS order -- variants to be supplied, units ordered and cost -- were not immediately available.
