Morelia, Mexico (AFP) Feb 8, 2010 Rescue crews unearthed seven more people buried inside their homes during rain-triggered floods last week in western Mexico, raising the death toll from the natural catastrophe to at least 42, state officials said. Six bodies were retrieved in Angangueo and another in Ocampo on Monday, Michoacan Public Safety Secretary Marco Duarte told AFP. All the bodies were found inside dwellings that collapsed under landslides in poor mountainside neighborhoods, he added. More than half of the country, particularly central and western areas, were affected by unexpected rains last week, which occurred several months ahead of the start of the usual rainy season. Michoacan state was the worst hit with 29 killed and dozens still missing. In central Guanajuato state two children were killed and in Mexico state another 11 died in a mudslide that buried a roadway. The heavily-populated capital Mexico City on Thursday activated emergency measures after the temporary collapse of its drainage system and the overflow of a sewage canal.
