Northrop Grumman Corporation has entered into a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Dominion Generation, Inc., a subsidiary of Dominion Energy, that enables the construction of a new 62.5 megawatt solar facility in Orange County, Virginia. Once operational in 2022, it is expected that the new solar facility will add enough renewable energy to the local grid to match 100 percent of Northrop Grumman's electricity use in the Commonwealth across its manufacturing and office operations. The solar power generated will also increase the company's renewable energy sourcing to 10 percent globally by 2022. "We have a long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions reductions," said Sandra Evers-Manly, vice president, global corporate responsibility, Northrop Grumman. "As we look beyond our 2020 goals, this project will play an important role in the next generation of our climate-related commitments." The facility will diversify Northrop Grumman's renewable energy portfolio, which also includes on-site solar power systems at the company's Melbourne and St. Augustine, Florida and Charlottesville, Virginia locations. "We applaud Northrop Grumman for driving renewable energy use and for being one of the largest manufacturers in the Commonwealth of Virginia to offset its energy consumption in the state with local renewable energy generation," said Kevin Haley, director, Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, which is an organization that works to streamline and accelerate corporate purchasing of off-site, large-scale renewable energy. The solar facility, which was developed by Cypress Creek Renewables and will be owned and operated by a Dominion Energy affiliate, is expected to break ground in early 2021, and is projected to generate approximately 140,000 megawatt hours annually, which is the equivalent to powering electricity to more than 11,000 homes. The project will also enable the company to avoid around 49,000 metric tons of carbon emissions each year.
