Russia's amateur astronomer Artyom Novichonok and his Belarusian colleague Vitaly Nevsky have discovered a comet which might become the brightest this decade.

The new celestial body was spotted during observations at the Kislovodsk Observatory in the North Caucasus, the International Astronomical Union says.

The comet, which is currently beyond the orbit of Jupiter, is expected to approach the Earth in December next year.
