Russian Nuclear Chief Travels To Japan For Nuclear Deals

Russia's top nuclear official will meet with his colleagues in Japan April 10-12 to discuss deals on uranium product supplies for the East Asian neighbor.

Sergei Kiriyenko will meet with Japan's senior nuclear officials and Foreign Minister Taro Aso to discuss a bilateral agreement that will open the way for direct nuclear contracts between Russian and Japanese companies. Russia presently has to re-export uranium products to Japan via the United States, France and Britain.

Nuclear power makes up 30% of Japan's energy, and the country intends to bring the figure to 40% by 2030, making nuclear power the key energy source. Russia is one of the world's leading suppliers of uranium enrichment services and has the capability to cover 30% of Japan's needs in uranium products.

The Russian nuclear delegation will also travel to Mongolia April 13 to discuss nuclear power cooperation agreements.

Leaders of Japan's nuclear power sector pledged Tuesday to do their utmost to ensure safety and transparency after a row on cover-ups further dented public confidence.
