Shell fire kills Israeli soldier near Gaza Strip: army
Jerusalem (AFP) July 27, 2014 - Israel's army said Sunday that one of its soldiers was killed near the Gaza Strip, taking to 43 the number of troops killed since the start of ground operations on July 8.

"The soldier was killed by a shell that was fired from the Gaza Strip at Israeli territory," an army spokeswoman said.

The announcement came after Israel extended a lull in its devastating Gaza offensive for another 24 hours until Sunday 2100 GMT.

Hamas however resumed rocket fire, and warned no ceasefire would be valid without the withdrawal of Israeli tanks.

About 20 rockets were fired at southern Israel between late Saturday and Sunday morning.

Late Saturday the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility for rocket attacks on southern Israel and Tel Aviv immediately after the expiration of an initial 12-hour ceasefire both sides had abided by.

Israel's unilateral decision to continue the ceasefire signalled a pause in its assault on Gaza, which has killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in less than three weeks.

Over the same period, 43 Israeli soldiers have died. Three civilians in Israel were also killed.

An Israeli air strike in southern Gaza hours before a humanitarian truce was declared killed 20 people, including 11 children, most of them from a single family, medics said.

The strike in southern Khan Yunis hit the home of the Najjar family, killing at least 14 members of the clan, emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.

Another two members of the Abu Shahla family were killed, along with four other people, two of whom have yet to be identified.

The dead included 11 children, among them a one-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, Qudra said.

The strike raised the toll in Gaza on the 19th day of violence between Israel and Hamas to at least 891 people, before a fragile 12-hour ceasefire went into effect.

The toll is expected to rise as bodies are pulled from the rubble of homes in some of the worst-hit parts of Gaza, in northern Beit Hanun, eastern Shejaiya and Zaitun, and southern Khan Yunis.

The conflict that began on July 8 when Israel launched an operation to stamp out rocket fire from Gaza and destroy Hamas tunnels has also killed 37 Israeli soldiers, and three civilians inside Israel.
