Two Syrian troops killed in clashes with 'terrorists': SANA

Damascus (AFP) May 11, 2011
Two Syrian soldiers were killed and five others wounded in clashes with "armed terrorist gangs" in the protest hubs of Homs and Daraa, the state news agency SANA reported Wednesday.

The agency, quoting a military spokesman, said that army troops and security forces "continue to pursue armed terrorist gangs and today arrested dozens of wanted men and seized large quantities of weapons and ammunition in the Bab Amr neighbourhood of Homs, and in the countryside of Daraa."

"Two soldiers were martyred and five others wounded as a result of the confrontations," the report said.

A soldier was killed and another wounded in the Daraa countryside, while a lieutenant died in Homs where four soldiers were also injured, the report added.

"A field hospital was also found in the Jilani mosque of Homs," SANA said.

Earlier a human rights activist said shelling and automatic fire rocked the Bab Amr neighbourhood of Homs, a central Syria city that has seen massive anti-regime demonstrations over the past eight weeks.

Daraa, in southern Syria, has been the epicentre of the protests.
