Villagers clash with mining company in China: report

 A protest by villagers in southwest China over a mining company led to injuries and damaged cars, a local newspaper reported Sunday, in the latest spell of unrest in the country.

The inhabitants of a village in Chongqing municipality clashed with personnel from the Zhongyuan Mining Company on Friday, according to a report from the Chongqing Evening News posted on popular web portal sina.com.

They were angry about what they claimed was the inadequate resolution of allegations that the firm's coal mining activities were damaging the area's environment, leading to landslides and a lack of water, the report said.

The clashes led to small injuries and damaged cars and other equipment, but calm had returned to the area, according to the report.

The newspaper made no mention of who in the company the villagers clashed with or how it had happened.

Local police and government officials were unavailable for comment.

Demonstrations are common in China, often fuelled by government-backed land grabs or other types of abuse of power.

A two-day violent protest last week in the northwestern province of Gansu had to be broken up with tear gas after over 70 people were injured.

 The Dalai Lama warned Sunday of the "great danger" facing the Tibetan people as he addressed leading exiles who vowed continued support for his policy of seeking greater autonomy from China.
